Hearts Flooded With Light

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying: The eye is the window of the soul. Why is that? The eyes seem to communicate various emotions. Wide-open eyes communicate fear, while a squint of the eyes communicates anger or disgust. Dreamy eyes are said to communicate love and affection.

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught His disciples that the eye is the light of the soul.

Matthew 6:22-23

The light of the body is the eye. Therefore if your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.

The eye is the organ of vision, but Paul tells us in scripture that the eyes are also figurative. It is a beautiful picture, the heart being regarded as having eyes looking out toward God. A proper understanding of spiritual truth is not dependent on having a keen intellect but rather a tender heart! The eyes see and understand what the Lord is doing or saying and reports directly to the heart making it tender.

Is your heart tender to the Word of God? Do you hunger and thirst for God as a deer pants for water?

Paul wanted us to have a deeper spiritual understanding, that “Ah Ha” moment when we say, “I see it! I finally see what you’re telling me, Lord!” Paul knew that as a man thinks in his heart, he would determine how he walks. The heart is the seat of the mind and will. It can be taught what the brain could never know. The heart speaks of the very center and core of one’s life, the seat of thought and moral judgment.

Ephesians 1:18

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

I hope that we can understand the things that Jesus spoke of not only in our heads but also in our hearts, the very essence of our being. When we know scripture in the head and not the heart, we are simply “smarter”, but when we know them in our heart, we will become more like Jesus. Jesus tells us that He is the light of the world and whoever follows Him will have the light of life. Therefore, our hearts will be flooded with the light of the Lord.

John 8:12

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

So if the eye leads the body to be full of light, and the heart is the eye to our understanding of God and His way in our lives, then is it safe to say that the heart can be flooded with light? Jesus is the light of the world, and if we follow Him and have those spiritual eyes to see and understand Him, then yes, our hearts are flooded with light – the light of Jesus.
